The 12 Houses (Bhavas) in Vedic Astrology
In Vedic astrology, the birth chart is divided into twelve houses, each called a Bhava. Together, these twelve Bhavas form a complete map of human experience — from the self and material possessions to relationships, career, and spiritual liberation.
Understanding the Bhava System
The Bhava system is the backbone of Vedic astrology. While the planets represent the forces of nature and the signs describe how those forces express themselves, the houses determine where in your life those energies play out. A planet in a particular house activates the themes of that house, coloring your experience in that domain.
The houses are grouped into meaningful categories. Houses 1, 5, and 9 form the Dharma Trikona (purpose and righteousness). Houses 2, 6, and 10 form the Artha Trikona (wealth and material pursuits). Houses 3, 7, and 11 form the Kama Trikona (desires and relationships). Houses 4, 8, and 12 form the Moksha Trikona (spiritual liberation).
Additionally, houses 1, 4, 7, and 10 are called Kendra (angular) houses and carry immense strength. Houses 5 and 9 are Trikona (trine) houses, considered highly auspicious. Houses 6, 8, and 12 are known as Dusthana (difficult) houses and present challenges that ultimately foster growth.
