Navamsa Chart (D9): Marriage & Fortune Analysis
The Navamsa (D9) is the most important divisional chart in Vedic astrology, often called the "chart of fortune and marriage." It divides each Rashi into nine equal parts of 3 degrees 20 minutes. No serious chart reading is complete without examining the Navamsa alongside the Rashi chart.
Construction of the Navamsa
Each Navamsa division maps to one of the twelve signs in a fixed sequence. For fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), the sequence starts from Aries. For earth signs, it starts from Capricorn. For air signs, from Libra. For water signs, from Cancer. A planet at 7 degrees Aries, for example, falls in the third Navamsa — Gemini.
Significance in Chart Analysis
The Navamsa reveals the deeper, dharmic layer of a planet's expression. A planet that is debilitated in the Rashi chart but exalted in the Navamsa (Vargottama-adjacent) gains considerable strength. The 7th house of the Navamsa and Venus's placement are primary indicators for marriage, spouse characteristics, and relationship quality. The Atmakaraka's Navamsa sign defines the Karakamsa, central to Jaimini astrology.
Vargottama Planets
A planet occupying the same sign in both Rashi and Navamsa is called Vargottama — it gains exceptional strength. A Vargottama Lagna lord or Atmakaraka is considered highly auspicious, lending stability and alignment between outer circumstances and inner purpose.
