What is the Lagna?
In classical Sanskrit, Lagna (लग्न) literally means "attached" or "joined to" — referring to the point where the eastern horizon is joined to the zodiac at birth. The Lagna becomes the cusp of the 1st house (Tanu Bhava — the house of self, body, and being), and all 11 other houses are counted sequentially from it.
Because the Earth rotates 360° in 24 hours, each of the 12 zodiac signs rises roughly every 2 hours. A person born at 6:00 AM will have a very different Lagna from someone born at 11:00 AM on the same day in the same city — which is why Vedic astrology treats the Lagna as the single most personalized point in the chart.
How the Calculator Works
Our Rising Sign calculator needs three inputs: your date of birth, exact time (including AM/PM), and place of birth. With these, it computes the local sidereal time at your birth moment and determines which zodiac sign was on the eastern horizon. The result is delivered in the Vedic sidereal zodiac (using the Lahiri Ayanamsa, the standard in Indian astrology), which differs from the tropical zodiac used by Western astrology by roughly 23-24°.
The calculator also returns the Lagna lord (the ruling planet of your Ascendant), its current house placement, and a brief interpretation of how your Lagna shapes your personality and life themes.

Why the Lagna Lord Matters
The Lagna lord is the planet that rules your Ascendant sign. Its strength, house placement, and dignity (exalted, own sign, debilitated, combust) are often more important than the Lagna sign itself. A well-placed, strong Lagna lord indicates good health, a clear sense of self, and overall life strength. A weak or afflicted Lagna lord can indicate health concerns or unclear direction. Our calculator surfaces the Lagna lord's placement alongside your Rising Sign.
Birth Time Accuracy
Since the Lagna changes every ~2 hours, an error of 15 minutes can sometimes shift you into the next sign — completely rearranging your chart. If your birth certificate or hospital record has the exact minute, use it. If you only know "around 6 PM," treat the tool's output as indicative and consider birth-time rectification through life-event matching with a qualified astrologer.
Classical foundation
The Lagna (Ascendant) as the foundation of the entire chart is documented in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), which describes it as Tanu Bhava — the house of self, body, and being. BPHS specifies that the Lagna lord's strength is the single most important factor in overall chart strength, affecting health, vitality, and the capacity to realize all natal chart promises. The Saravali and Phaladeepika provide detailed results for each planet when placed as Lagna lord in each of the 12 houses. The Lagna's role as the primary house reference (rather than the Sun sign) distinguishes the Parashari tradition of Jyotish from both Western astrology and some other Vedic sub-schools.
Methodology and accuracy
The Ascendant is computed from your birth date, time, and geographic coordinates using the local sidereal time at birth. Swiss Ephemeris-grade astronomical data is used for planetary positions. Lahiri ayanamsa correction converts tropical coordinates to sidereal. The ecliptic degree rising on the eastern horizon at your birth moment is determined from the obliquity of the ecliptic and your geographic latitude. Birth time accuracy within 4 minutes produces an Ascendant accurate to within 1°; an error of 2 hours can shift the Lagna to a different sign entirely. This calculator uses equal-house division standard in Vedic astrology.
