What is Gochar?

Gochar (Sanskrit: go = planet, char = movement) refers to the real-time movement of planets through the zodiac signs after the moment of your birth. In Vedic astrology, your natal chart is a snapshot of the sky at birth, but the planets continue to move — and their ongoing journey through signs and houses activates different themes in your life. A Gochar reading overlays current planetary positions against your natal Moon sign (Chandra Rashi), which is the primary reference point in the Parashari system. When a slow-moving planet like Jupiter or Saturn transits a sensitive house from your Moon, its effects can last months or even years.

The most significant Gochar planets are Jupiter (Guru), which brings wisdom and expansion; Saturn (Shani), which delivers karmic discipline; and the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu, which create sudden upheavals and spiritual evolution. The classical text Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra devotes entire chapters to interpreting these transits.
