Benefic vs Malefic Planets: Are They Always Good or Bad?
One of the most common misconceptions in Vedic astrology is that benefic planets (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, Moon) always produce good results while malefic planets (Saturn, Mars, Rahu, Ketu, Sun) always cause harm. The reality is far more nuanced — a planet’s effect depends entirely on what it rules in your specific chart.
Natural vs Functional Classification
The natural classification is universal: Jupiter and Venus are always natural benefics, while Saturn and Mars are always natural malefics. However, the functional classification changes with every ascendant. A planet becomes a functional benefic when it lords over Kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) or Trikona (1st, 5th, 9th) houses. It becomes a functional malefic when it rules Trika houses (6th, 8th, 12th).
For example, Saturn is a natural malefic but becomes a powerful Yogakaraka (best planet) for Taurus and Libra ascendants because it rules both a Kendra and a Trikona house. Conversely, Jupiter — the greatest natural benefic — becomes a functional malefic for Gemini and Virgo ascendants because it rules the 7th house (a Maraka) and a Trika house.
When Malefics Shine
Saturn as Yogakaraka for Taurus ascendant (ruling the 9th and 10th houses) can bestow extraordinary career success and fortune during its Mahadasha. Mars for Cancer and Leo ascendants rules highly beneficial houses and can deliver wealth, property, and courage. Even Rahu, though always a shadow planet, amplifies the results of the house and sign it occupies — in the 10th house, it can create powerful career achievements.
When Benefics Harm
Venus for Aries ascendant rules the 2nd and 7th houses, making it a double Maraka (death-inflicting planet). Its Dasha can bring health crises. Jupiter for Capricorn ascendant rules the 3rd and 12th houses — both associated with loss and expenditure. The key lesson is that reading a birth chart requires understanding functional lordship, not relying on natural classification alone. Every planet has the potential to be your greatest ally or your most challenging influence, depending on your ascendant.
