What is Tarabalam Chart in Vedic Astrology?
Tarabalam, meaning “star strength,” is a Nakshatra-based system in Vedic astrology used to assess whether a particular day is favourable for an individual. It compares the transit Moon’s Nakshatra against the native’s birth Nakshatra to determine daily auspiciousness.
How Tarabalam is Calculated
The calculation begins by counting from the native’s Janma Nakshatra (birth star) to the Nakshatra the Moon transits on a given day. This count, divided by 9, produces a remainder between 1 and 9. Each remainder corresponds to one of the nine Taras: Janma (birth), Sampat (wealth), Vipat (danger), Kshema (prosperity), Pratyari (obstacles), Sadhaka (achievement), Vadha (death-like), Mitra (friend), and Parama Mitra (best friend).
Taras numbered 1, 3, 5, and 7 are considered inauspicious, while 2, 4, 6, 8, and 9 are auspicious. This simple yet effective system allows anyone to quickly assess whether the day’s lunar energy supports their plans — whether it is starting a business, travelling, or beginning medical treatment.
Practical Use in Muhurta Selection
Tarabalam is one of the five essential checks (Panchaka) in Muhurta selection. Even if other factors like Tithi and Yoga are favourable, an inauspicious Tarabalam can undermine the outcome. Experienced astrologers always verify Tarabalam before recommending dates for weddings, property purchases, or major financial transactions.
The system is particularly valuable for daily decision-making. Unlike complex Dasha or transit analysis, Tarabalam provides an accessible, personalised daily forecast that anyone can compute with basic knowledge of their birth Nakshatra. This makes it one of the most practical tools in the Vedic astrologer’s toolkit for everyday guidance.
Limitations and Context
While Tarabalam is a powerful daily indicator, it should not be used in isolation. Major life decisions require a comprehensive analysis including Dasha periods, transit impacts, and the overall birth chart strength. Tarabalam is best understood as one supportive layer within a multi-factor astrological assessment.
