What Is the Dashamsha Chart?
Vedic astrology uses a system of 16 divisional charts (Shodashavargas) to zoom into specific domains of life. Each divisional chart is derived from the birth chart by dividing the zodiac signs into increasingly small segments. The Dashamsha — from Sanskrit Dasha (ten) + Amsha (portion) — divides each of the 12 signs into 10 equal parts of 3° each, producing a 120-section map of the sky.
The classical text Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra assigns the D10 exclusively to career and karma — the meaningful actions one performs in the world. Where the birth chart (D1) addresses career as one of twelve life domains, the D10 is devoted to it entirely, making it the go-to chart for any professional question.
Because each 3° segment corresponds to just 12 minutes of birth time, the D10 is extremely sensitive to birth time accuracy. An error of even 10 minutes can shift the D10 Ascendant into a new sign, changing the entire framework. This is why astrologers always verify birth times carefully before doing detailed D10 analysis.

D10 vs. D1 Career Analysis
The D1 and D10 charts must agree for a career prediction to be reliable. Here is how they work together:
- D1 strong, D10 strong: Clear, powerful career success with both potential and professional manifestation aligned.
- D1 strong, D10 weak: Career potential exists in the birth chart but professional execution is uneven. Success may come through personal effort despite organizational or authority friction.

Methodology and accuracy
The D10 chart is computed from exact planetary longitudes using Swiss Ephemeris-grade astronomical data with Lahiri ayanamsa correction. Each planet's degree within its birth sign is used to determine which of the 10 equal segments (each 3°) it falls in, and the corresponding D10 sign is assigned per the classical construction rule. Because each 3° segment corresponds to approximately 12 minutes of birth time, birth time accuracy within 5 minutes is important for a reliable D10 Ascendant. An error of 15 minutes can shift the D10 Lagna by one or two signs.
