What is Kundli? Birth Chart in Vedic Astrology
A Kundli (also spelled Kundali or Janam Patri) is the Vedic birth chart — a precise map of the sky at the exact moment and location of your birth. It records the positions of all nine Grahas (planets) across the twelve Bhavas (houses) and twelve Rashis (signs), forming the foundation of every prediction in Jyotish Shastra.
How a Kundli Is Constructed
To generate an accurate Kundli you need three inputs: date of birth, exact time of birth, and place of birth. From these, the Ascendant (Lagna) is calculated — the rising sign on the eastern horizon at that moment. The Lagna fixes the house framework, and each planet is then placed in its observed sidereal longitude, adjusted by the chosen Ayanamsa.
A standard Kundli uses the North Indian diamond or South Indian grid format to display the twelve houses. Advanced analysis extends to Varga (divisional) charts such as the Navamsa (D9) for marriage and the Dasamsa (D10) for career.
