Saptamsa Chart (D7): Children & Progeny Analysis
The Saptamsa (D7) is the divisional chart specifically designed to evaluate matters related to children, progeny, and creative output. It divides each Rashi into seven equal parts of approximately 4 degrees 17 minutes, creating a focused lens on the 5th house promise of the birth chart.
Construction Rules
For odd signs, the seven divisions begin from the sign itself and proceed in zodiacal order. For even signs, they begin from the 7th sign from it. This yields a chart where each planet's D7 position reveals its influence on progeny-related matters — conception, number of children, their well-being, and the native's relationship with them.
How the D7 Is Constructed
For odd Rashis (Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius), the seven Saptamsa divisions begin from the Rashi itself and proceed through the zodiac in sequence. For even Rashis (Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces), the seven divisions begin from the 7th sign from the Rashi. Each division spans 4°17'8.6'' (one-seventh of 30°). Planets falling in different divisions are mapped to the resulting signs. The precision of birth time is critical — small errors shift planets between Saptamsa divisions, which span less than 5 degrees each.
Classical Source
The Saptamsa is described in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra in the Shodashavarga (sixteen divisional charts) chapters. Parashara specifies the D7 as the divisional chart dedicated to progeny (children) and their well-being. The BPHS provides both the construction rules and the interpretive framework for D7 analysis — specifying Jupiter as the natural significator (karaka) for children and the 5th house of D7 as the primary indicator for progeny matters. The Brihat Jataka by Varahamihira also references the Saptamsa in the context of children analysis.
Practical Example
Consider a chart where the 5th house lord in the Rashi chart is Saturn, placed in the 6th house (an inauspicious position for progeny). In the D7, if Saturn falls in the 5th house but is aspected by Jupiter, the debility is partially offset — the native may experience delays or difficulties initially but eventually have children. If simultaneously Jupiter is in its own sign (Sagittarius or Pisces) in the D7, the overall D7 picture is more favorable despite the Rashi chart's challenge. Childbirth would tend to correlate with Jupiter or Saturn Dasha periods when both charts show activation.
Key Indicators in the D7
Jupiter, the natural significator (karaka) of children, is the most important planet to examine in the Saptamsa. A strong, well-placed Jupiter in D7 indicates healthy progeny and fulfillment through children. The 5th house lord of the Rashi chart examined in D7 reveals the ease or difficulty of having children. The 5th house of D7 itself, along with its lord, provides specific details about the firstborn.
Timing and Fertility
The Dasha of planets strong in the D7 often coincides with childbirth. Conversely, periods ruled by planets afflicted in both the Rashi and D7 charts may indicate delays or difficulties. Malefics like Saturn and Rahu in the D7's 5th house can point to delayed parenthood, while benefics there suggest timely and joyful experiences with children.
