Marana Karaka Sthana: Death-Like Placements
Marana Karaka Sthana (MKS) refers to specific house placements where a planet becomes severely weakened — as if "dead" — losing its capacity to deliver positive significations. Described in Jaimini and Parashari texts, MKS is one of the most potent forms of planetary debility, distinct from sign-based debilitation.
MKS Placements for Each Planet
Sun is in MKS in the 12th house — the house of loss diminishes its vitality and authority. Moon suffers in the 8th house, creating emotional turmoil and anxiety. Mars is weakened in the 7th house, disrupting partnerships. Mercury struggles in the 4th house, affecting domestic peace and mental comfort. Jupiter is afflicted in the 3rd house, reducing wisdom and fortune. Venus suffers in the 6th house, harming relationships and luxury. Saturn is in MKS in the 1st house, burdening the self with hardship. Rahu in the 9th and Ketu in the 3rd are also considered MKS by some authorities.
How MKS Is Assessed
MKS is a house-based weakness that applies regardless of the planet's sign dignity — an exalted planet in MKS still struggles to deliver its significations through the house it occupies, even if its own-sign strength is high. The assessment considers: (1) whether the planet is solely in MKS or also has other weaknesses (such as debilitation or combustion), since compound weaknesses are more severe; (2) whether benefic planets aspect the MKS planet, partially mitigating the effect; (3) the strength of the planet in the Navamsa — a planet in MKS in the Rashi chart but strong in Navamsa may deliver its promise with delay rather than absence; and (4) the Dasha sequence — MKS effects become experientially prominent during the planet's own Mahadasha and Antardasha.
Classical Source
Marana Karaka Sthana is described across Parashari and Jaimini literature. The concept appears in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra in discussions of planetary positional debility beyond the standard Neecha sign. Jaimini texts also reference specific house placements where planets lose their vitality. The specific MKS house assignments — Sun in 12th, Moon in 8th, Mars in 7th, Mercury in 4th, Jupiter in 3rd, Venus in 6th, Saturn in 1st — are found in various classical commentaries. The term "Marana" (death-like) reflects the classical view that the planet in such a position behaves as if its natural significations are extinguished.
Practical Example
Consider a native with Venus in the 6th house — Venus's Marana Karaka Sthana. Venus rules relationships, luxury, beauty, and comfort. In the 6th house (disease, debt, enemies, competition), Venus's significations face a hostile environment. For a Taurus Ascendant (where Venus is the Lagna lord), Venus in the 6th means the Lagna lord is in MKS — the native's overall vitality and relationship life may face recurring challenges. During Venus Mahadasha, these themes become more prominent. However, if Jupiter aspects Venus from the 2nd or 10th house, some protection is available and the challenges may translate into growth through adversity rather than unmitigated difficulty.
Effects and Severity
A planet in MKS struggles to protect its significations even if it is otherwise strong — in its own sign or exalted. The effect intensifies during that planet's Dasha period, when its weakness becomes experientially prominent. However, benefic aspects and Yoga participation can partially mitigate MKS effects.
Remedial Measures
Strengthening a planet in MKS through remedies — mantras, gemstones, charitable acts, and worship of the planet's deity — is especially important. Awareness of MKS allows astrologers to prepare clients for specific challenges and recommend targeted interventions.
